Julia Zemiro grew up in a family of three with only her parents. Julia was born in Aix-en-Provence, France and lived there for two years.
It's safe to say that she did not speak a word of English, learning the phrases as she grew older. Her days got spent watching her grandpa Tom cracking macadamia nuts beneath his big Queenslander or feeding ducks.
Besides, it did not take long for her to get used to the heat, attending the Sydney Girls High School and the University of Sydney. She graduated with a degree in Art before getting accepted to the Victorian College of the Arts Drama School and moving to Melbourne.
In an interview with SMH, she unveiled that her parents parted ways when she was only nine years old, but she had cordial relationships with them.
Her Father Was A French Restaurateur
Being the only child, she was showered with love from her father, Claude, who made money as a French restauranter.
He did not have it easy, as his dad passed away when he was only six years old. His mother became the sole breadwinner and sent her two boys to the orphanage to fend for themselves.
After his family scattered, he joined the Merchant navy and taught himself how to cook and stew, still bringing his salary to his mom. He could not cut ties with his terrific grandmother and great aunt, the two women who nurtured him when his mother failed.
It took a while, but he saved up enough money and opened a French restaurant in Bondi. She recalled him saying that caramelizing your onions would put natural flavor in dishes.
Her Mum Is From Queensland
Her mother, Jane Zemiro, originally called Queensland her home but took a boat to France in her early 20s.
She met her husband-to-be on the same ship, where he was working as a waiter. There was a mutual attraction as they began dating and soon got married.
Meanwhile, her mom never left her job, working as a French teacher at high schools while her spouse opened two restaurants, Home Cooking and Crab Apple. Zemiro got appointed as a lecturer at the University of Sydney, subsequently writing the book series Tapis Volant and Mini Vol and Révisions.
Indeed, she was recognized by the French government in 2000 after getting prestige with the Ordre des Palmes Académiques.
