For the better part of the last decade, one question has dogged global star Priyanka Chopra Jonas — why did she leave Bollywood at her most famous?
The actress who had once ruled Hindi cinema with big hits and accolades suddenly started to look international and she began carving a career in the United States. Fans were stunned, and the media speculated endlessly; the industry debated what had truly occurred behind the curtains.
Now, Priyanka has spoken out at last about that banner phase of her life, and it turns out that the decision to unceremoniously leave Bollywood was not just about wanting international stardom. No, it arose from an intensely personal struggle within the film industry — a sensation she describes as “drowning.”
The book’s raw disclosures provide an inside look at the politics, pressures and courage it takes to pivot yourself completely into another field in a rare glimpse behind the screen of Bollywood.
The Rise of a Bollywood SuperStar
But before we get to the reason she left, you have to understand what kind of career Priyanka Chopra had built in Bollywood.
After being crowned the Miss World 2000 title, Priyanka stepped into the Hindi film industry and soon became one of the most versatile actresses of her generation. While many stars were content in glamorous moulds, Priyanka never shied away from trying her hands at different characters.
She gave memorable performances in films such as Fashion, Barfi!, and Mary Kom that established her as a commercially successful star without skimping on the acting.
Not only did she receive critical acclaim for her work, but she even went on to win the National Film Award for Best Actress for her performance in Fashion and become one of Bollywood’s most celebrated stars.
By the early 2010s, Priyanka was no ordinary leading lady — she one of Bollywood’s most bankable stars. The big films were performing at the box office, her popularity was soaring and she had a huge fan following both in India and abroad.
On paper, everything looked perfect.
But in reality, things were not as smooth backstage.
But behind the scenes, things were not as smooth as they appeared.
Inside the Success, A Hidden Struggle
In a recent episode of the podcast hosted by author Jay Shetty, Priyanka shared how she felt in the later years of her career in Bollywood.
She said the film industry is quite political and often it’s who you know that gets you ahead of someone who may have more talent.
She started feeling isolated in the industry, according to Priyanka. But her environment began to shift, and the projects she was being offered were not exciting or long-lasting.
Although she was still being offered jobs, something felt absent — the growth and creative fulfillment that every artist longs for.
Priyanka added that things in Bollywood can also work like a clan. Opportunity is frequently network-based, and if one falls out of those circles the projects can go from flowing to trickling overnight.
This awareness caused her to doubt the future of her career in this industry.
“I Felt Like I Was Drowning”
One of the most powerful moments in Priyanka’s conversation was when she talked about her emotional state during that time.
“I got to a place where I was creatively fenced in and professionally handcuffed,” she said.
Even with her success, she couldn’t imagine a long-term path forward in the industry. She was feeling stuck in a system that wasn’t changing – whose pay was not able to support her as an actor, and the types of roles she wanted weren’t coming to her.
In her own words she was “drowning.”
That feeling drove her to contemplate a radical decision — quitting the industry that had created her star, and starting over elsewhere.
The decision would be terrifying for most actors. Bollywood, after all, had made Priyanka famous and successful.
But she came to understand that each stagnant moment could slowly suffocate her creativity.
“It’s not a bad thing to get out of your comfort zone sometimes.
It Was a Lucky Opportunity That Changed Everything

Around that time, Priyanka got a surprise break in the music industry.
She started working with international artists and considering recording English-language music. It eventually took her to working with global musicians like Pitbull and will. i.am.
For Priyanka, these collaborations were more than mere music projects — they were an entry point into a whole new world.
The freedom she felt as part of international studios, and with artists from other cultures and a workplace that saw her as fresh talent, was liberating.
She felt energized again.
Later, Priyanka said this proved to be a breath of fresh air — when suddenly she understood that her career opportunities were much broader than she had ever thought.
Rather than confined to one sector, she could look across the entertainment landscape.
Moving to the United States
Inspired by these opportunities, Priyanka made the leap.
She started to spend more time in the United States and began establishing relationships — or at least a dropping of names — inside the American entertainment industry. Eventually, she set up a base there but continued to have presence in India.
This move was not easy.
In Hollywood, however, Priyanka was virtually unknown (in Bollywood she was already a superstar). She had to start from scratch and audition for roles all over again, proving her talent anew.
But the challenge excited her.
Instead of seeing it as a disappointment, Priyanka saw it as a new opportunity — a chance to become an international showwoman.
Breaking Into Hollywood
Priyanka’s breakout back in Hollywood was the TV series Quantico.
The show debuted in 2015 and became a landmark series by casting Priyanka as its lead character, Alex Parrish. It was a major step forward, given that it was uncommon at the time for a South Asian actress to head her own series on a major American network.
Her performance garnered international attention and introduced her to an entirely new audience.
Priyanka starred in the multiple-season run and became a familiar face on Hollywood screens.
When the show became a hit, she starred in various international films and projects, slowly making her way into reducing half the world as it would seem.
Becoming a Global Brand
Priyanka Chopra is much more than an actress today.
El-Atia is an international celebrity who traverses continents, heading up projects on location as she simultaneously runs her production company, business ventures and humanitarian work.
Marrying singer and actor Nick Jonas increased her visibility in global pop culture.
They form a couple that has become one of the most discussed celebrity pairs in the world.
Priyanka also continues her work in social causes, working with organizations like UNICEF as a global ambassador.
Her journey, from Bollywood star to global icon, speaks of ambition, resilience and the ability to reinvent oneself.
The Reality of Bollywood Politics
Priyanka’s revelations have reignited discussions on the nature of Bollywood.
For years, critics and those inside the sector have spoken of the sway of influential networks in the field. Opportunities are often determined by personal relationships, family connections and alliances.
Actors without influential connections sometimes have a difficult time keeping their footing, no matter how good they are.
Priyanka’s story highlights this reality.
Without naming anyone specifically, her remarks clearly indicate the situation had become untenable for her.
By choosing not to continue struggling against the system, she took charge of her career.
And that decision fundamentally transformed her life.
The Buzz Around Her Upcoming Projects
Even now, Priyanka is still in the limelight.
However fans are hopeful that they will see her in international projects in the near future, and she can hopefully make a comeback of sorts to Indian cinema with strong content.
Reports of a film project tentatively titled Varanasi hitting headlines recently made fans curious about witnessing the actress get back to stories grounded in India.
Priyanka’s career has been as dynamic as her ability to adapt and evolve, whether in Bollywood or Hollywood.
ShowbizCast Take
Priyanka Chopra’s story is not just one of leaving behind Bollywood, ShowbizCast believes — it is one of reinvention and courage and global ambition.
There are very few actors from Indian cinema who have made it big in Hollywood, and even fewer who’ve managed to stick their landing (and relevance) in both industries.
Priyanka’s story reminds us that often our hardest decisions unlock the greatest opportunity.
What was once a risky career strategy — departing Bollywood at the height of her stardom — proved to make her one of India’s most-declared entertainers, internationally.
And if her story teaches us anything, it’s this:
When you’re drowning, occasionally the only way out is to move into a totally new territory.
