According to lawmakers and former staffers cited in the report, her memory is rapidly deteriorating. The 88 years old Feinstein lawmaker has, at times, appeared to have problems recognizing longtime colleagues, recalling conversations and detailed policy, and can no longer complete her job duties without her staff doing much of the work needed to illustrate the nearly 40 million people of California.

In a statement to the Chronicle, she realized that the past year had been harrowing and distracting due to the demise of her husband, the investor Richard Blum. Still, she again refuted suggestions that she could not fulfill her duties as a senator.
