Spider-Noir: Why Nicolas Cage’s Dark Marvel Series Could Change Superhero Television

Superhero entertainment has reigned for the past ten-plus years. We’ve seen city, planet and reality saving superheroes across huge cinematic universes and the small screen alike. But what’s a big reason that we’re all so thrilled to see Spider-Noir on the big screen again? Nicolas Cage! There’s just something about him. Few actors in the world have such a perfect mix of raw intensity, cool charisma, and absolute unpredictable weirdness. Throughout the course of his career Cage has given us a variety of fantastic performances in countless different genres of films. From hard-hitting action and dramas to-sci-felics and psychological thrillers, Nic Cage has pretty much done it all. One of the things that we loved most about his performance of the voice of Spider-Man Noir in Into the Spider-Verse was how well he channeled the original, old-school detective feel of the character, and now he’ll have the chance to do it in live-action, and we couldn’t be more excited about it. You can easily see how Cage would have no problem transitioning from the role to a life-action superhero story that, while action packed, requires a certain blend of wit, seriousness, and subtle humor.

A Spider-Man Story Unlike Any Other

What’s really interesting about Spider-Noir is that it’s nothing like Spider-Man as we know it. Pretty much every version of Spider-Man is of the teen hero trying to balance high school, family and friends with saving New York City. However, this take is entirely different; we are given an old, jaded private investigator in the darkest of American times rather than a teenager torn between hero duties and a regular life. Spider-Noir’s version of the character spends just as much time investigating crime and following leads as he does fighting criminals; the detective aspect truly sets the series apart from typical superhero works as they provide action, suspense, mystery, and psychology rather than merely action.

The Importance of the Noir Genre

I felt it was unlike anything I had ever played, and in order to really understand why it was so unique I think that first I should give a brief overview of the genre known as noir film. The genre of noir films became established in the 1940s and can be identified by; the dark shadow noir style of filming, corrupt characters and themes, common appearances include corrupt officials, outside-of-the-law detectives, savage criminals, and heroes stuck between two evils; it is not good vs evil in this genre but, not gray area of action but instead a gray area of judgment.Spider-Noir can be directly linked with these concepts. It almost feels as though Spider-Noir was founded upon the notion of how to replicate the tone of those old noir films, but add a modern twist by applying it to new forms of narration and using superhero concepts.

Why the 1930s Setting Matters

Setting is a vital part of the world of Spider-Noir. As well as being home to the organized crime that the period is so famous for, the New York of the 1930’s was also plagued by economic depression that affected millions of citizens, leaving a world that is far removed from the high-tech setting we associate with the contemporary New York City. In such an environment, the lack of modern technology makes all investigations reliant upon sight, intuition and personal links; every clue is essential; every witness interrogation is vital; and every action involves a higher level of danger, giving the detective element a more naturally suspenseful feel to it. In addition to providing an atmosphere which is unlike that found in modern superhero tales, the historical period also allows for the exploration of sociological problems and cultural perspectives not usually touched upon.

A Darker Hero for a Dangerous World

Arguably his personality is what defines Spider-Noir as truly special. Instead of the usual quipping, smart-aleck Peter Parker, Noir’s demeanor is subdued, sarcastic, and seems to carry far more weight than many people are able to shoulder. In his universe, his experience has molded him into a vigilant, strong-minded hero who realizes that being a hero carries a lot of weight and a lot of pain. Even though he’s not the same kind of hero, this doesn’t necessarily mean he isn’t a good one; in fact, in some cases, it means the exact opposite. He continually fights a war that appears unwinnable, and his existence in it constantly on the line, his sheer endurance epitomizes the values that Spider-Man has always represented as a hero.

The Visual Style Could Be Revolutionary

It’s no doubt that Spider-Noir’s greatest strength is its visuals. The production seems to fully commit to the classic noir aesthetic and contains dark shadows, brutal light and scenery that attempts to appear as though it is ageless. Each frame of film seems to be well constructed and intended to pull you in more. One of the most interesting visual choices they make however is giving the viewer the choice of viewing the show in either black and white or color. I enjoyed the black and white version of Spider-Noir because I think it’s a very smart tribute to old noir film.The color version, on the other hand, offers a way to truly see how much detail was put into the production design of the show and it does not compromise the tone at all. It’s a technique that you don’t see very often in television and it proves the creators love of this genre.

Building a Rich Supporting Cast

No story in noir is great in spite of its protagonist. The story thrives in its many supporting characters. Spider-Noir is populated with a variety of individuals that give the world life. Whether they are members of law enforcement or journalists, gangsters or politicians; these individuals have played a vital role in the overall mystery that the series will unveil. The characteristic that all noir characters possess is that they all have secrets. Some individuals may appear trustworthy and be a genuine threat to Spider-Noir with hidden motives. Others might seem suspicious and ultimately be discovered as someone who can be trusted. This aspect keeps a level of doubt about what is truly happening to create suspense. How Spider-Noir interacts with these characters may truly give this series the upper hand.

Expanding the Spider-Man Universe

Throughout the years, it’s clear that the Spider-Man universe works across any number of formats, and the world has come to love any animation, live-action, alt-universe, or multiverse version of the Spider-Man tale we give them. For Spider-Noir, we take a look at still yet another aspect of the Spider-Man saga. It doesn’t seem that the creators were trying to simply retell a story again, but expand upon the possibility a Spider-Man story could hold and that’s what will ultimately keep such a franchise alive. The audiences know what the basic Spider-Man story entails now and they prove that with these new endeavors, we are just beginning.

The Growing Demand for Mature Superhero Stories

With more adult stories about superheroes increasing in popularity over the past few years, I’m glad to report there are many more people who want complex narratives that fly in the face of most established genre tropes. Spider-Noir, it couldn’t have been a better fit.

While it focuses on themes of crime, corruption, ethics, and self-sacrifice, its style is perfect for those that are tired of generic genre trends and would enjoy a more thought provoking experience. The series also allows a lot of accessibility to the average viewer due to its adventurous nature and ties into the general enjoyment one receives from seeing a superhero tale unfold, all of which has the potential for Spider-Noir to have mass appeal.

Why Marvel Needs Projects Like Spider-Noir

So far, Marvel has dominated the genre by interconnecting narratives and putting on spectacle on the biggest scale possible. But perhaps for the future of the genre it takes experimentation to succeed. Spider-Noir is a prime example of how you keep the franchise alive. Spider-Noir instead of treading the familiar paths, the series is a visual and narrative experiment as well as a new take on how a story can be told. This series shows that the superhero story is not confined to action and sci-fi. By using detective genre elements, as well as using a noir narrative, this Marvel production shows a desire to take risks, the idea of which alone excites me most.

What Fans Are Hoping to See

So as more details arise the anticipation is getting higher for Spider-Noir and while some want the show to fully capture the feel that made the comic books and animated appearance so classic, many want to see Nicolas Cage give a full live action rendition. Some are excited to see more character development and much more intricate storytelling than we usually see from most superhero shows. With enough good writing, acting and visuals the Spider-Noir project has potential to be one of the most anticipated Marvel series to date.

Right now is when it truly matters what new ideas are introduced into the superhero genre, and while fans have always enjoyed stories of heroes, we also want something new and different from television today. Spider-Noir provides just that. Combining elements of detective mysteries, crime thrillers, historical pieces, and superhero mythology together creates a television viewing experience unmatched with what we have available to us today. With Nic Cage taking on the lead role, an atmospheric noir setting with incredible visuals, and mature and thought-provoking narrative, the series has the possibility of being one of the greatest television projects ever. We will see what Spider-Noir becomes – either a riveting crime drama, an outstanding superhero narrative or simply an amazing character piece-but either way, Spider-Noir will push the boundaries of what can be done in a superhero television show.
