One moment she seems tender and in distress, the next there is an unsettling presence to her and the tension she creates is palpable. You don’t know which Nikki you’re going to get from one scene to the next, which is where the real power of her performance shines through.

Visual Style and Cinematography

Horror isn’t a genre that is all about the plot- it’s also all about the setting. Obsession makes a master of the mise en scene, so the look of the film actually complements the psychological collapse that happens within it. As the film goes on, the camera actually begins to make the audience feel much more claustrophobic- long, tightly composed shots and tight close-ups can often induce feelings of anxiety and pressure, and the lighting becomes progressively darker and colder, until even a commonplace room seems a source of dread.
